In a vase on Monday

Grand plans to post more in August never materialised. But hey, a new month, new efforts called for! And new, seasonal, things to love.

One of the things I’m liking most at the moment is Dahlia ‘Café au Lait’.

It has massive dinner-plate flowers (not usually my kind of thing), but it’s the colour that makes it perfection.

Starting out really quite a strong pastel pink and then fading to a creamy, frothy, brown, before flattening out to a delicate white.

With it in my vase are asters (Callistephus chinensis), Zinnia ‘Purple Prince’ (yes!), some Gladiolus ‘Purple Flora’ from Peter Nyssen’s ‘Jewel Collection’ (highly recommended), statice (Limonium sinuatum) and two dahlias from the Peter Nyssen ‘Karma’ collection: ‘Karma Serena’ and ‘Karma Irene’.

The dahlias were gorgeous this year – so much pleasure from them, although once again I didn’t get time to support them properly or disbud, so I don’t always get the best flowers for cutting.

    Dahlia ‘Café au Lait’ is such a gorgeous thing! Every time I see it, I wish I had space for Dahlias in my garden! You’ve combined it beautifully in your lovely vase.

      Thanks so much. You might try growing a dahlia as special as this in a pot? I wondered about it this year, and then I chickened out. Next year!

    I’m glad to see you pop up on IAVOM again, Cathy. I’ve yet to try growing ‘Cafe au Lait’ but I may based on your description of its color shifts. That’s one of the marvelous features of many dahlias in my estimation, the subtle daily changes in the appearance of the blooms.

      Oh Kris – haven’t visited you for a while and I always so enjoy your posts/vases. Sorry. That is one lovely dahlia – do try it. It went against everything I wanted in a flower, but every time it opens a bloom I rejoice!

    Cathy, your September effort certainly is a worthy and admirable one! Love the Café au Lait and the surprising use of the gladiolas. Gorgeous. My glads finished many weeks ago. Hope things are going well.

      Thanks Susie – I am really loving it too! They don’t like too much dry, do they, the glads? You got the very tail of mine with this post.

    That is one of those ethnic flowers that every good Italian American should grow, along with nasturtiums, zonal geraniums, callas, oleanders, (maybe) carnations and such; but I do not grow them anymore I will eventually.

        Dahlias are not really Italian. They are from Central America. They just happen to be very popular with people of Italian descent, perhaps because we are so involved with those of Mexican descent.
